Major Osteoporosis Risk Factors in Caucasian / Asian Postmenopausal Women

• Personal history of fracture as an adult
• Fragility fracture history in parents, sisters and brothers
• Low body weight…127 pounds or less, small, thin frame
• Current smoking
• Three or more months of cortisone therapy for arthritis, asthma, or other diseases

Additional Risk Factors (The more factors you have, the higher your risk.)

• Lifelong low dietary calcium intake
• Early age estrogen deficiency (early menopause or female-surgery induced)
• Physically inactive
• Long-term medication for thyroid or seizure disease
• Two or more alcohol drinks per day
• Impaired vision, dementia, poor balance/recent falls
• The more factors you have, the greater your risk of osteoporosis and bone fracture.

Just as high blood pressure can lead to strokes and kidney failure, osteoporosis can lead to debilitating fractures with very serious complications.
